Nanga Delok is a traditional Iban longhouse village located deep in the Batang Ai region of Sarawak. Surrounded by lush rainforest and the scenic Batang Ai Reservoir, it offers visitors an authentic cultural experience and a glimpse into Iban traditions and jungle life. The Iban people of Nanga Delok are descendants of early settlers who migrated upriver generations ago. Their daily life still revolves around farming, fishing and community engagement. Life in Nanga Delok is deeply guided by an Iban tradition, a code of customs, respect, and spiritual belief. Visitors who stay at the Nanga Delok Longhouse Homestay contribute directly to the community’s income, helping fund education, cultural preservation, and forest conservation.

DAY 1 KUCHING / DELOK LONGHOUSE

At 0800 am, pick up from your hotel. Drive 275km to Batang Ai. Few stops will be made along the journey. First stop will be at Serian town. Serian town’s highlight is the native market. Explore the market to identify some jungle products such as local vegetables and fruits. You may help your guide to purchase some of the items for your supply during the trip. Next stop will be Lachau, a little town for lunch. After lunch, continue the drive to Batang Ai jetty. Upon arrival, proceed by the longboat for 1 hour across Batang Ai Reservoir to Delok Longhouse. Meet the longhouse chief and check in at the host family room. Dinner will be at the host family room/chief. Enjoy the evening and relax at Ruai (communal veranda). Listen to stories of the Ibans and learn about their cultures.

DAY 2 JELIA RIVER

Breakfast. The destination of the day is Jelia River which takes a 10 to 20 minutes boat ride from the longhouse. The highlight activity is to trek to one of the trails. Learn about plants that are used by locals for (handicraft, food, medicine). Swimming is available in the river / small waterfall after the trek. You may participate in preparing local BBQ lunch at the riverbank. Proceed back to the longhouse in the afternoon. Free at leisure in the evening / chat with locals. Overnight at the longhouse.

DAY 3 DELOK LONGHOUSE / KUCHING

Breakfast with host family before bidding them farewell. Take a boat to the terminal jetty and continue overland back to Kuching. Lunch en-route. Drop off at the hotel in Kuching.

Recommended items to bring: Good hiking shoe (Made in Malaysia Rubber Shoes is recommended), raincoat / poncho, hat, insect repellent, leech sock, sun block, walking stick (if needed), sleeping bag, sleeping mat, mosquito net, water bottle, toiletries, towel, swimwear, headlight / flashlights, personal First Aid Kit, dry bag packed to carry your personal items.
